Who We Are: What We Do
About the Permian Basin MPO

The Permian Basin Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a regional agency mandated under federal law to conduct a cooperative, continuous, and comprehensive transportation planning process.

The MPO plans and allocates funding for the construction of transportation improvements across multiple transportation modes, as well as sub-area corridor studies.

Funding for MPO programs comes from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The MPO boundary covers areas that include existing urban population centers as well as locations expected to become urbanized within the next 20 years.

Currently, the MPO estimates that 340,455 people (U.S. Census Bureau) live within this boundary.

Public Involvement

Public involvement is an essential part of the transportation planning process.

The Permian Basin MPO places special emphasis on ensuring that the public has opportunities to participate, provide feedback, and stay informed.

We invite you to browse our website to learn more about how we are improving transportation and quality of life throughout the region.

Your input is important to us. Please feel free to contact us with questions, suggestions, or to become more involved in the transportation planning process.

Our Team:

Urbanized Areas (UZAs) are U.S. Census designated areas with populations of 50,000 residents or more.

An Adjusted Urbanized Area is a Census-defined UZA boundary that has been modified by the State Department of Transportation to include additional territory for transportation planning. These adjustments often include high-density industrial or commercial areas.

Federal law requires Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to serve all Urbanized Areas.
